  • Retailers And Content Companies Flood The iPhone App Store For The Holidays (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 18:16:57 -0600)

    imageimage
With the holiday season coming up, it's worth taking a look at what retailers, mobile content companies, game-makers, and advertisers are doing on the iPhone's App store to capitalize on the big money-making event—especially since this is its first year and there's no past experience to learn from. I see two camps forming: One by retailers, which are trying to create easy-to-use apps that encourage purchases; and one by content companies, which are hoping downloads will spike from people cashing in gift cards for a game or other entertaining app. It will be interesting to see what people learn from this holiday and how they will do things differently next year. Already, one thing I can see Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) doing differently is by adding a temporary "holiday" category since finding everything was not intuitive.

A look at what Santa's putting in the iPhone stocking, after the jump...

-- iPhone savvy retailers: A recent example of what retailers are doing is the application launched by Amazon.com today. The online retailer's first iPhone app lets users search for anything from a CD to a $1,500 TV, or suggests "a little something" you can buy yourself. A more unique mobile service is an experimental feature that allows users to take a photo of a product, which is then sent to real people who try and match it to a similar product in the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) store. Within a day or two, the results will be revealed next to the photo. Other examples of retailers trying to tap into the iPhone's engaged audience include Gap and Target, which have both launched Christmas-themed retail applications, and other shopping comparison sites, shopping lists and even an app called "Delivery Status Touch," which allows shoppers to track purchases on UPS, Fedex, DHL, and sites like Amazon.

-- Content under the tree: Almost all other applications making their way on to the App store right now can fall into this category. In the last two weeks, about 2,000 apps have been launched in the store, which is likely an abnormal spike since there's of a grand total of about 10,000 apps since the store launched about five months ago. Apple also held a briefing two weeks ago to highlight the developers that were rolling out games and apps just in time for the holidays. Those included things like ngmoco's upcoming Rolando game, and Gameloft's "Ferrari GT Evolution." But in particular, there's a number of Christmas and Hanukkah-themed content apps, such as apps that are selling snowglobes, and Christmas-themed games, wallpapers, ringtones and music stores.

  • Oops. Kleiner Perkins Accidentially Publishes iFund Submissions Online (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 16:43:14 -0600)

If you or your company submitted your information to Kleiner Perkins to be considered for an investment from the VC firm's $100 million iFund, you might want to see if your information has been leaked. Names, phone numbers, email addresses, business plans and bios from 588 applicants were accidentally published online by the firm's former hosting provider, TechCrunch reports. Meteora Technologies Group published the data in a SQL file that was later cached by Google and found in a search on one of the companies listed. Fruux, which originally found the file, notified Kleiner Perkins of the privacy nightmare and the file was removed this morning. This latest data snafu is a reminder that information submitted via online forms like the one implemented by the VC firm is never completely safe, particularly when susceptible to human error, which appears to be the culprit in this case.

  • Report: Text Messaging Will Continue To Be The Darling Of Mobile Data Revenues (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 14:02:14 -0600)

imageForget splashy video, music and games; text messaging will continue to be the "cash cow of mobile data revenues for some time to come," according to a new report from Portio Research. The mobile messaging market is expected rake in $130 billion in revenues by the end of the year, and is on pace to climb to $224 billion by 2013. At that level, mobile messaging will make up 60 percent of all non-voice service revenues. At least some of those increased revenues might be due to the higher price of a text message and operators' push to encourage more bundled services at the point of sale. Interestingly enough, although the U.S. is considered late to the SMS party, Americans now send double the number of messages that Europeans average each month. Filipinos lead the industry with an average of 755 messages per subscriber each month and Chinese subscribers are hovering just over 100 messages a month. SMS is the messaging tool of choice everywhere but Japan where mobile email has surpassed the use of text messaging. Release.

    Other highlights:

-- Mobile e-mail users will quadruple globally from about 250 million today to more than a billion by 2013.
-- Mobile instant messaging will increase dramatically from 111 million users worldwide today to 867 million by the end of 2013, correlating in a jump in revenues from about $2.5 billion in 2008 to $12.4 billion in five years.
-- MMS will reach $30 billion in revenues next year.
